Fritz Lang: METROPOLIS

SNG MARIBOR - Velika dvorana

A digitally restored copy of Fritz Lang's silent film classic Metropolis, one of the greatest masterpieces in film history, will be shown within the European Capital of Culture framework. The copy includes recently discovered parts, which had been lost for decades. A timeless dystopian tale examining the search for humanity and the rising of downtrodden people seems no less revolutionary and magnificent nowadays than it at the time of its release in 1927. Fritz Lang spent some time in Ljutomer during World War I, where he was recuperating from an injury at the house of Karl Grossman, a pioneering Slovene filmmaker who made the first Slovenian film record. The film will be accompanied by a 60-member symphony orchestra to be conducted by Robert Israel – one of the greatest experts in the field of silent film accompaniment – which will perform the original movie score by Gottfried Gupertz.

VOJNA IN MIR

SNG MARIBOR - Velika dvorana

Tomaž Pandur, the world-renowned director from Maribor, combines two themes, "War and Peace", which, in his view, observe each other in two mirrors standing opposite each other. The display of the excellent actor’s creations reveals the eternity of war and change to the audience: War is the period of battles and switches places with Peace when people start to fear the possibility of another conflict. If War creates accurate history, then Peace is the period of delusions. And if War is hell, then Peace is a purgatory and paradise is somewhere far away, external to the story of War and Peace. When War prevails, Peace observes it as a theater show and the other way round. We might be witnessing a show by one and the same type of actor with a capital letter, who plays two large parts in the same theater, consecutively and energetically, but always skillfully.

The large illustrated encyclopedia of morals and passion and the effect of the modern age, directed by Tomaž Pandur, will bring an exciting drama to Maribor with renowned actors and a fertile imagination.

MANDRAGOLA

SNG Maribor - Velika dvorana

Ivan Jevtić: Mandragola comic opera. Text by Vesna Miladinovič, adapted from the text by Nicolla Machiavelli.
Conductor: Vesna Šouc Tričković, Srbija
Director: Slobodan Unkovski, Macedonia,
Set design: Meta Hočevar, Slovenia,
Costume design: Angelina Atlagić, Serbia

The story of Mandragola (The Mandrake), the significant literary work by Machiavelli, written in 1520 and regarded as the purest example of Renaissance comedy, will be presented slightly differently-as a comic opera by Ivan Jetić, one of the foremost Serbian and European composers. The comic opera story of Mandragola takes place in medieaval France. After 20 years, the young man Callimaco returns to town and immediately falls in love with the beautiful Lucrezia, who is married to an old, wealthy trader by the name of Nicia. Callimaco confides in his wily friend Ligurio, who promises to bring them together. Easier said than done…The setting of this operatic story, told this time through the production of the Serbian Madlenianum, has been directed by one of the most important directors in the Balkans-the Macedonian, Slobodan Unkovski. The set was designed by Meta Hočevar, the renowned Slovene scenographer; the costumes were designed by multiple award-winner Angelina Atlagić. The orchestra will perform under the baton of the top Serbian conductor Vesna Šouc Tričković.

http://www.madlenianum.rs/
